‘Said the Preacher’: A Poem about Waiting

Said the preacher,
‘Call on the Lord—
let him fill you
with power,
power,
Power!
from on high.
Come to the front,
kneel at the rail,
receive the Spirit.’

And so I went to the front.
I knelt at the rail,
my hands and heart open to receive the Spirit.
And I waited.
Others knelt, stood, and departed.
But I waited.
And I waited.
I waited so long that I thought
the Spirit had passed me by.

But in the waiting,
I knew my prayer
had already been answered.
